Federal, State, and Local Government agencies have created programs that give women-owned businesses a better chance at receiving grants/loans, winning contracts, and qualifying for set-asides.

These programs give your company the status of being “Women-Owned Small Business Certified.” Not only does this help you succeed in Government areas, but it will also help you increase yearly revenue, be seen by more consumers, and expand your company for the future.

This article will dissect the different types of Women-Owned Business Certifications at the Federal and State levels and how they help your entity.

How to Get Women-Owned Business Certified

Women owning small businesses that are willing to research and complete the lengthy certification process may do so independently. You can file for a Federal Women-Owned Business status through the SBA and a State Women-Owned Business status through WBENC and hope everything was completed correctly.

Both Federal and State Certifications require an incredible amount of information to and it all must be flawlessly collected. However, if you submit your certification applications with errors, you may have to restart the registration process entirely under even more complicated guidelines.

Both Federal and State certified women-owned businesses gain access to:

  • A vast network of support
  • Targeted opportunities
  • Increased visibility in corporate and government supply chains
  • Educational programs to spur growth
  • Networking with thousands of other women-owned businesses.

Types of Women-Owned Business Certifications

Federal Certifications like the WOSB and EDWOSB offer the most lucrative opportunities for business owners. However, specific qualifications make these certifications tough to receive for some companies.

That’s where State Certifications such as WBE and MWBE can be perfect for growing businesses. Check out the different options available to Women-Owned Businesses looking to get certified.

  • Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Certification

The holy grail of Federal Certifications, the WOSB Certification, will set your Women-Owned business up to receive 5% off all Government contracting dollars.

  • Economically Disadvantaged Women-Owned Small Business (EDWOSB)

For Women-Owned businesses considered economically disadvantaged, the EDWOSB will set your business up to receive millions in contracts.

  • Women-Business Enterprise (WBE) Certification

Similar to the WOSB Certification, but at the State Level, this creates easier access for women-owned businesses that are not quite ready to take on the Federal sector.

  • Minority-Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) Certification

A sister certification of the WBE, the MWBE Certification, gives businesses owned by minority women an upper hand.
