The 6 Steps to Working with the Government

Government contracting is not simple and easy to understand. It takes years of knowledge and experience to get the process started and done correctly.

At GSE, we help businesses of all sizes looking to get into government contracting with everything from required registrations or certifications to providing information access critical to winning business from the federal, state, and local governments.

If you own a business, our on-hand specialists will walk you through the five steps needed to get started selling to the U.S Government.

Step 1 – SAM Registration

The first step of government contracting is to obtain a UEI Number through a SAM Registration. It is simple to do and will cost you next to nothing to utilize our experts.

The Federal Government uses a unique identifier (UEI), currently a nine-digit number, for each entity registered in its system. In order to receive grants, loans, contracts, or awards, your business must be fully and accurately SAM Registered.

The registration is valid for one year from the date of completion and must be renewed 60 days before the yearly period ends.

Optimizing your business to be registered under the System for Awards Management will save you time and money. It will also deliver a seal of approval from the government, showing that you are a qualified and trusted company.

Step 2 – Getting Certified

The second step your business should take is to get a Certification that is right for your business. Getting certified will give your business an upper hand at contracts and awards relevant to your industry. It will also put you at the top of the list for Government Agencies looking to fulfill their set-aside requirements.

The Certifications that GSE assists businesses in completing are:

If you’re serious about making the State or Federal Government your customer, getting certified will help you every step of the way.

Step 3 – Capabilities Statement

The next step on your way to selling to the government is to complete your ideal Capabilities Statement for your business. Marketing in the government marketplace is aggressive and challenging. You won’t stand a chance against the competition without well-drafted capabilities statements.

A Capability (Capabilities) Statement is a concise document of your business’s primary competencies. It is an essential tool if you want to do business with a Government Agency of any size.

There are some critical areas that every capability statement should highlight, including:

  • Core Competencies
  • Differentiators
  • Past Performance
  • Company Data
  • Contact Information

The purpose is to convey to potential Government clients who you are, what you do, and how you are different from your competitors. Do it well, and your business could secure a contract with the largest purchaser of goods and services in the world.

Step 4 – Government Contracting Opportunities

Once you are registered, certified, and have drafted a spectacular Capabilities statement, it’s time to start bidding on Contracts. For this, you’ll need to know where to look.

That’s where our state-of-the-art GovExpert Marketing Database comes into play. GSE’s vast database holds every piece of information a company would need to take advantage of open Government Contracts.

Step 5 – Submit Bids on Relevant Contracts

Writing proposals to bid on government contracts is challenging and can take a significant amount of time. Our expert consultants can help you write a winning proposal and lead your business to a successful future.

A proposal to bid for a government contract is a formal plan set forth for a government agency’s consideration. Bid proposals exist to break down what goods or services will be given to a consumer by a business and at what cost, time limit, and quality they will be presented.

It is not easy to write a perfect bid proposal. Our on-hand writers will help you select the proper contracts and draft the ideal proposal to help you win that contract.
