The General Services Administration (GSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have announced today a plan to construct sustainable buildings at St. Elizabeths West Campus in Washington D.C. The funding of almost $288 million, provided as part of the current Administration’s Investing in America agenda, aims to improve the infrastructure and create more jobs.
The project’s sustainable design elements will help the environment and the local economy. Over 500 jobs will be created for the duration of the construction, and the finished campus will have a reduction of carbon emissions, stormwater runoff, and energy use. Additionally, the project aims to be LEED Gold certified for the benefit of sustainable materials, energy conservation, and land conservation practices.
The new buildings will be used to serve as offices for the DHS Headquarters, and they will be designed to meet the highest standards of resilience and sustainability. The area will feature numerous bicycle racks and walking paths to promote alternative modes of transport and encourage sustainable travel while reducing dependence on personal vehicles. Furthermore, These buildings will be powered by renewable energy sources to minimize their carbon footprint and reduce operational costs.
GSA Administrator Emily W. Murphy said, “This significant infrastructure investment will enhance mission continuity, provide sustainability in our capital infrastructure, and drive economic development in our communities,” and added, “The President’s Build Back Better plan invests in American workers and communities to create new growth opportunities for all.”
This project is part of the President’s plan emphasizing sustainability, job creation, and community development. The revitalization of the St. Elizabeths West Campus will not only help the environment but will also strengthen our economy and create good-paying jobs, and large contracts for small businesses.
